Weekly Review Column Featured in the Bigfoot Valley News
Available for Syndication to Regional Print Based Publications
Featuring Classy Youth, Family, & Elder Friendly Books
Literary Fiction and Nonfiction, Seasonal & Holiday, Health, Cooking, Fitness, Rural Life, How To, Fun Themes, Early Literacy
The BookWorm appears weekly in the Bigfoot Valley News. Readership is about 4,000 people, primarily in the Klamath Trinity region of Northern California. The column runs between 450 and 550 words and features up to three books per week. Subjects are rotated on a weekly basis. The following rotation schedule is somewhat flexible depending on the titles available and the time of month holidays are celebrated.
First week – Literature (Novels, poetry, essays, memoirs, biography, anthologies, etc.)
Second Week – Fun Theme (Two to three books on a subject such as sharks or jungles.)
Third Week – Alternates between Health and Cooking (Next year fitness will be added.)
Fourth Week – Seasonal or Holiday (Fiction, nonfiction, and children’s titles.)
Fifth Week – Fun Theme or Hobbies
The focus for the literature column is on classy, intelligent, relaxing reading material that is life affirming and up lifting. Often the column is about a particular author's work; at other times a number of titles are featured.
Fun themes often incorporate early literacy, youth, and a literary title so there is something for everyone. There are times the fun theme may just feature children’s books and other times they may focus on a creative pursuit; it is nice a surprise each month.
We all face some health challenges at some point in our lives; information can help us cope. I look for books that explain what is going wrong and offer solutions that may help readers improve their health and quality of life. Alternate months cook books are covered with an emphasis on special diets. Cook books may also be included in seasonal or fun theme columns.
Seasonal and holiday columns can include early literacy, youth, fiction, memoirs, anthologies, how to, and/or cook books. I try to run the columns around four to six weeks before the specific holiday so folks have time to purchase or order the books and any supplies they may need. The seasonal theme often spills into the other columns, for instance during the weeks before Valentine's Day cook books may focus on special treats, and literature may focus on love.

Agents, authors, publishers, and publicists please read the General Information above. It will give you an idea about the types of books I review and it will give you some perspective for the information that follows.
I have noticed many web sites offering to review books for a fee. I do not charge a fee; however, I am very picky. Books must be professionally written and edited. The layout, typesetting, and design should be up to industry standards. I only review books with a positive slant. Titles featuring horror, suspense, erotica, pornography, or racial stereotypes are not accepted. Romance titles are typically reviewed in February only. Those warning of the impending end of the world through global warming (or whatever) should offer solutions. Books with an overly dogmatic, religious, superstitious, or new age focus are not a good match for my readers.
Classy books for children, youth, and adults are always welcome. I typically organize topics up to 6 months in advance and write columns as much as 10 weeks ahead. I am currently seeking titles on the following subjects:
Discovering America - picture books, history, etc. (Sept 26)
Family, Food, and Thankfulness – picture books, cook books, essays, etc. (October 24)
Bats – Young adult or adult literary title with a strong bat theme. (October 31)
Literary Work or Collection - by a woman or women, with female main characters who solve their problems by their own wits. If we can wrap that into a Christmas theme I will be ecstatic. (December 3)
Christmas - Picture book appropriate for preschoolers. (November 29)
For next year:
I am seeking books for three columns each on the following subjects:
Fitness, active play, and outdoor activities
Cook books for special diets and special occasions
Hobbies and crafts for adults and children
And
Calendars, Almanacs, & Diaries for January
Valentines Day -I want to focus either on Chocolate or feature a Victorian theme
Career - tell-all, diaries, the life of; aimed at older teenagers and young adults (May or June)
Independence Day - I am looking for one book for adult readers that can tie in with a theme of "The Colors of Patriotism."
I will also be seeking books for up to twelve columns each on:
Fun seasonal themes for children, youth, and adults
Literary fiction and nonfiction for adults
