Bio for The Book Worm (This column is no longer running . . . the Bio is still interesting.) At age ten, Harvest was caught reading in the middle of the night. She was hiding under her covers with a flash light and volume “M” of the Encyclopedia of the Natural World. From that point on, her family called her The Bookworm. Harvest brought her background in social work, early childhood education, and family literacy to her unique column: “The Book Worm.” An eclectic mix of books was shared, with an eye to enhancing everyone’s quality of life. Reviews focused on books with positive themes and values. The selection ranged from children’s picture books, to novels and literature, nonfiction and how to, as well as titles focused on improving health and longevity. | Harvest first began gardening alongside her beloved grandmother as a young child. Grandmother’s garden embraced diversity and organics way before those themes became a trend. In the years since that time, Harvest has made and worked in many gardens, both personal and professional. Her experience includes market gardens, demonstration, and botanical gardens. She was a certified UC Master Gardener in Sacramento County, where she also took some college course work in horticulture. Disgusted with the chemical recommendations, she dropped out and began offering classes in natural living and health through a number community colleges and other organizations in California and Nevada. Eventually, she went to work full time in the education and literacy field and settled down Hoopa, CA. She now gardens and writes full time, the sound of the river and the breeze in the mountains always nearby. For more information please see Digging the Dirt, Sample Gardening Column, and Kudos. Top |

| Bio for Literary Works:
Harvest began writing when she was eight while living in rural Napa County, CA. Her poetry was her secret passion, her tool of survival in a sometimes stark and brutal childhood. Even at that early age, she dreamed of being published. On excursions to town, the family’s “Pill Bug” Chevy passed a small publishing house. Heart pounding, she surreptitiously dropped her first “submission” from the car's window, hoping it would be found. Harvest’s first publication credits date to her high school days. At that time, she had a four-inch collection of original manuscripts on every imaginable kind of paper, from scraps of brown paper bags to the backs of envelopes. To everyone’s amazement, it was stolen at gun point. Undaunted by this experience or by several instances of copyright infringement, Harvest, now 51, continues to write. She has collected over five pages of publication credits; a combination of poetry, essays, and non-fiction. She is most well known for her herb book, “Sacred Smoke,” published by Native Voices and available at book stores everywhere. Harvest is also a published photographer and has won awards for her writing, photography, ceramics, bead work and baskets. Top |
